News - LEONARDO DICAPRIO: Charity auction

Movie star invites you to meet him in aid of Haiti relief charity…

Want to meet Leonardo DiCaprio and help a worthwhile charity?

Leonardo DiCaprio, the star of films such as Titanic, The Departed and The Aviator has offered his time to support the charity, J/P HRO.

The non-profit was created by Sean Penn and supports a range of relief and reconstruction projects in Haiti.

The charity's health programmes currently treat around 8,000 patients a month and since its launch it has helped nearly 40,000 people leave disaster relief camps and return to their neighbourhoods.

DiCaprio is offering movie fans an opportunity to make a donation to the charity for a chance to meet him at an upcoming event.

The lucky winner of the charity auction and a guest will have the opportunity to meet the star at a forthcoming premiere, as well as experience the fun of the after party. The exact date and location of the event is to be confirmed.

The offer which is being run on the auction site Charity Buzz comprises two tickets to the premiere and after party, plus a brief meet and greet with the much admired actor.

Other achievements of the J/P HRO charity are the setting up of two primary health care clinics, a women's clinic, a mobile clinic, a 24/7 emergency room, and a cholera treatment isolation clinic in Haiti staffed entirely by Haitian doctors and nurses.

The J/P HRO centres have cared for 183,000 people the charity says, and J/P HRO medical staff have delivered more than 1,100 babies without a single maternal mortality.

There is still much work to be done in Haiti and that’s why organisations offering sustainable programmes are so vital. Only about half of the ten million cubic metres of debris has been taken away since the earthquake struck in 2010. Hundreds of thousands of people are still in camps waiting for their own homes.

The multiple award-winning Leonardo DiCaprio has supported a wide range of charities since he came to prominence in the 1990s including Feeding America, Global Green, International Fund for Animal Welfare, SOS Children's Villages and TreePeople.

DiCaprio also runs his own charity foundation that focuses on environmental issues. If you want to meet the Hollywood legend and well regarded philanthropist and help Haitian relief efforts, remember the deadline for bids is Thursday February 9, 3pm EST...
